The Heathland Centre (Lyngheisenteret) is beautiful located on the island of Lygra, 1 hour drive from the city of Bergen.
Queen Sonja opened the Centre in 2000, which today is the only village in Europe where you can experience authentic Heathland with local farmers, which are organized and open for the public. It is a museum, member of the cluster Museum Centre of Hordaland, which have to convey the coastal culture from western Norway in addition to the protection of heath. The information building has a restaurant with traditional and local food, meeting room, cinema hall, exhibition and museum shop.
In 2001 The Heathland Centre got the UNESCO's global cultural landscape price for the conservation of the cultural landscape, and in 2005 Europe Nostra's Cultural Landscape award for its pioneering role in the protection of authentic heathland, and the maintenance of its biological diversity and traditional knowledge ' EUROPANOSTRA.
If you need accommodation, we can recommend Lygra Guesthouse and Magnusgården, two old farm houses in walking distance from the centre.
